Do you see that dog in the back? That's Scarlett, the dog that inspired Lucky Dog. To learn more and read the news article about how Scarlett was rescued, click here.
Kaila brought Scarlett home in the summer of 2020 with strict rules of, "No touch, no talk, and no eye contact." Scarlett was fearful of human interaction and would lose control of her bladder. She was almost feral and avoided people like the plague, often sleeping alone in the kitchen. It was obvious Scarlett was scared and thought the further she could keep her distance from people, the better.
So what did Kaila do? She learned about positive reinforcement and how to train her, teaching her everything she could. The more they got to know each other and what the other wanted, the less scared Scarlett was. Soon enough, Scarlett learned all the basics- sit, stay, down, up, leash skills, and more.
And one day while talking with Kim, from Peace Creek Animal Sanctuary, she asked, "Why don't you teach other people to do this?" and she had a point.
Kaila got her certification in dog training and realized her love for improving the lives of our pets and being a voice for the animals of Fort Dodge, Iowa.
With time, Scarlett began to form her personality; she loves to sneak chew bones outside, her whole body shakes when she wags her tail, she has a howl you can hear from across town, and she gives quick face kisses but we’re still careful not to overwhelm her with all the love we have to give.
Scarlett is no longer the fearful dog she was before and is now the lovable happy dog she deserves to be. After a long and hard journey, she found her home and her family and will never know a life without love again.
Scarlett was a diamond in the rough and became a symbol and example of forgiveness, unconditional love, and learning how to trust again.
Although it all started because of Scarlett, Kaila has been an avid supporter of animals since she was a child and Scarlett gave her the inspiration and reason to do it professionally.
Kaila became certified in positive reinforcement dog training in the fall of 2021, is certified with the National Animal Control Association, and proceeds to take many continuing education classes that include dog behavior, aggression, or dog communication.
I was so happy to find Kaila at Lucky Dog training. I had been trying to train my lab, but she has high energy, anxiety, and some dynamics in our dog pack changed with the recent death of Daisy’s mom. Kaila understood the situation and knew exactly what to do to help Daisy thrive as a dog. She was patient with me as an owner and I walked away from the training sessions feeling empowered to work with my dog, helping to strengthen our bond, rather than sending her away to a trainer. It’s amazing to see the growth in knowledge and confidence of both our dogs when applying the principles that we learned. Kaila helped with suggestions for the whole family to work with our dogs to make everyone grow their bond with the family dogs. What sets her apart from other trainers is she explains the why behind certain behaviors, and then shows the owner/handler how to adapt to do what the dog understands best. She personalizes the techniques so it’s not a “one size fits all” strategy. I plan on going back for more advanced training when time allows.
Kaila and lucky dog training are incredible!! My girl Annie loved coming to dog training once a week and had so much fun at each session. Kaila clicked so well with my shy girl! They were best friends by the end of session one! The difference in her behavior and obedience is like night and day from when we first started! Kaila is especially good at explaining how/what to do when teaching a new skill. I can’t recommend Kaila enough! Lucky dog training is probably Annie’s favorite place to go!
We had a great experience working with Kaila! Our dog, Jonas, came to us from a hoarding situation and he hadn't been socialized or around a lot of people. We did some 1:1 training sessions and then transitioned into the group classes. It's been an extremely rewarding experience watching Jonas come out of his shell and building confidence.
